Do the Buildings Exhibit a Value System?

This is a great thought from one of your classmates. Is it possible that the buildings we construct say something about who we are and what we value? If so, what do they say?
Also, how are tangible things like buildings (or cars or phones...) related to intangible things like values (or love or hope...)?

--thanks to Sherri for this idea!

  2. yes, i agree!
the way the buildings are built do reflect all of us. by constructing these buildings, we build them based on ourselves and what people want or what is popular at the moment. We want things simple, so we make buildings that are easy to get around and that are more efficient. the structure in how we want the building to look also says something about us. basically we value simplicity. when buildings are built "fancy" in a way, that says we value money and rices.

  4. Our buildings reflect a value set of values within a structure of safety. Our buildings vary from extravagant to the mundane but all reflect a little bit of ourselves and our nation. The smaller structures tend to have a mundane look to reflect our humble beginnings. the larger structures tend to have an added brilliance that reflects the wealth we've acquired as a nation.

  5. The buildings constructed throughout life represent our knowledge of history and safety. The more years that pass will lead us with more knowledge of how to build structures better to withstand different types of obstacles given through life.

  6. One can punch a hole into the wall of most houses built in the last 50 years. They are made of paper, won't even hold up a framed picture unless you get the right type of drywall screw. Does this mean that we lack permanence, that we are a weak and easily broken, temporary people?

  7. i think the buildings we construct refelct our values. For instnace if a person got a house built they would want it to reflect their style and personality.

  8. I think that if we construct a building that is going to represent our knowlegde that we have gain in many ways. Also it will represent the style we like.

  9. the buildings that we construct will always say something about our society. Throughout history the construction of buildings have been a reflection on our culture. Look at the romans and Greeks, the Chinese and Japanese, now look at us today what a difference.

  10. As I watched the construction of our new recreation center I began evaluated what this building represents to me. I found that I value the recreation center as an opportunity to become healthy in hope of living a long and fulfilling life.

  11. i think that all the buildings do represent something because they each are there for a reason. and most of the time, they are there to benefit us.

  12. The buildings we construct now show how much we have learned over the years. We have found easier and safer ways to build. This has shown how we have advanced in time.

  14. i guess in some ways building do show what we value. not just the structure because we dont get to completely decide what its going to look like unless we get it done from scratch. but the inside of the building shows a lot. not only by whats in it but how its kept up as well.

  15. Yes, I believe that the buildings that we create reflect us because our buildings are evolving and becoming stronger, and we as people are also evolving and becoming stronger.

  16. Yes, the way we build things it based on what we value. Such as having more green buildings is also saving electricity. Or maybe having a rounder shape can make things look a little more open... We made safer and easier ways to make buildings and we keep on that structure now...

  18. Perfect example of buildings representing value would be the world trade center. What the terrorist attacked more than a building, was American power structure, and center of what our country represents; A capitalist society.
